Jon Swainson :: The Veil
The Veil

Information

From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island Immigration depot processed almost 12 million immigrants travelling to the United States in search of a new life.

Often, after weeks at sea, immigrants landing here underwent physical and mental inspections in order to gain access. Anyone with visible health problems was either sent home or was kept in the Islands hospital facilities for long periods of time.

Imagine the uncertainty for some people who passed through here, their intended destination visible through the window, but impossible to reach. As though the simple curtain obscuring the view were some impenetrable barrier.

As Jonathan says, it goes very well with the story, really puts the whole thing in context.
